Shait Gombuj Mosque, Bagerhat, Khulna, Bangladesh

Bagerhat town is about 20 km southeast from Khulna and about 250 km southwest from Dhaka (Capital of Bangladesh). You can go Bagerhat from Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal by road. You can also reach there by stermer via Barisal and Khulna, but it will take long time. Bagerhat was known as Khalifatabad in the early age.
Shait Gombuj Mosque is the main attraction of Bagerhat. It’s the most magnificent monument of Bagerhat. This mosque stands on the eastern bank of a water tank. This water tank is very large and it is known as Ghora Dighi. This mosque is about 7 km from Bagerhat town. Shait (sixty) Gombuj (dome) mosque has 77 domes including 7 four segmented hut shaped domes in its central row.

It is one of the largest mosque of Bangladesh. Its externatl dimension is 49m x 33m. The large prayer hall has 11 doorways on the east and other 7 on the north and south each.
There are 10 concave mihrabs. These mihrabs are on the western wall and decorated with terracotta motifs. You will see a small arched doorway in the western wall which are close to the central mihrab. The corner turrets are curved parapat capped by rounded cupolas. The eastern turrets are tall.
There is a countryard enclosed by brick wall around the mosque. There are doorways at the middle of each wall. Shat Gombuj Mosque is really awesome.
